Le Corbusier Ronchamp : photographs by siegrun appelt

Le Corbusier's chapel Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp is arguably the most famous modern religious building and a UNESCO world heritage site. It has been photographed by millions of people, including some of the most distinguished architectural photographers. Austrian artist Siegrun Appelt took an entirely new approach to look at the iconic structure, distinct from all her famous predecessors. Appelt focuses with utter concentration on details, creating compositions of highest sensitivity and precision. Her images highlight the place's spatial structure and lines, Le Corbusier's ingenious direction of light, as well as surfaces and passages. They can be read as hints to these details and at the same time invite a conclusion from detail to the whole.
This publication includes a dialogue between Claudia Kromrei and Otto Kapfinger, in which they investigate the potential of photography to show Le Corbusier's means of expression and discuss the visualisation and perception of material and immaterial elements of this icon of 20th-century architecture.

New edition of the comprehensive monograph on celebrated architect Peter Zumthor, covering his entire career until 2013
Features all key buildings and projects through photographs, plans, drawings, and texts written by Peter Zumthor
The first edition of 2014 won the 2014 Filaf d'argent (Festival International du Livre d'Art & du Film) and the 2014 DAM Architectural Book Award 2014
«Few architects are as patient and exacting as Peter Zumthor, and this monograph captures the materiality and intangible spirit of his work in drawings, photographs, and his brief texts. It was an inspired idea to divide this rich concentration of work into five slim volumes, rather than cram it into one of the mega-publications that entomb other celebrated architects. Each is a delight to hold and page through, and a model of Swiss design from the gray silk covers to the crisp typography and spacious layouts. Rarely has haptic architecture been better expressed in print.» - Michael Webb, The Architects Newspaper, on the 2014 edition
«With the same rigor and poetry of his architecture Zumthor offers us his opera omnia. But so laconic is he that who knows if this is the last.» - Eduardo Prieto, ArcitecturaViva, on the 2014 edition
Peter Zumthor, 2009 Pritzker laureate, is one of the best-known and most acclaimed architects of the present day. Widely admired for his precision and thoroughness, he creates buildings that are responsive to their location and function, and that are remarkable both for their materials and the atmospheric quality of the spaces they enclose.
This five-volume survey of his work until 2013 features 43 buildings and projects, including some that have never been published before. On 856 pages with more than 750 photographs, plans, sketches, drawings and watercolours, and with texts written by Peter Zumthor himself specially for this monograph, it documents a wide range of projects from several world-famous buildings to some that never left the drawing board. The first edition of 2014 won the 2014 Filaf d'argent (Festival International du Livre d'Art & du Film) and of the 2014 DAM Architectural Book Award. -

Discovers the importance of gardening in the work of Swiss-American photographer Marina Schinz.
Gardens and flowers have been a core subject of Marina Schinz's career. This found expression in her previous books Visions of Paradise, The Gardens of Russell Page, and A Tuscan Paradise. Visiting and photographing countless gardens around the world made her engage in gardening herself and culminated in major garden design projects for her houses, first in the Hudson Valley and later near Piacenza in Italy.
In Green Thoughts and Memories, Schinz looks back at her gardening adventures, interweaving horticultural observations with memoirs of her childhood in Zurich. Entertaining and engaging at the same time, full of practical considerations, and rendered with humor and philosophy, the book offers an unconventional appreciation of garden art. It conveys basic knowledge to put budding gardeners and rank beginners on the road to planting a mere tree or starting an entire garden. In twelve chapters, it explores all the elements of gardening, such as weather, soil, labor, planning, flowers, shrubs, etc.
Richly illustrated in full color throughout with Schinz's photographs of famous and unknown gardens around the world, this beautiful volume will appeal to anyone with a love of plants and gardens or with a desire to create a personal paradise. -

Representing vision is a core theme in the art of Markus Raetz (1941-2020). The imitation of a binocular field of vision, which he chose for Zeemansblik, is as simple as it is convincing. Raetz created some 20 versions of this relief, made of painted and later of polished zinc sheet, in various dimensions. The Dutch term zeemansblik (sailor's view) can be translated as a view of the sea, yet blik in Dutch also means sheet metal. Raetz's wordplay refers objectively to the material and at the same time invites an interpretation of the horizontal fold in the plate as a sea horizon. Light reflections on the curved blank material change with the viewer's moving point of view, suggesting changing weather. A simple, abstract object on the wall thus becomes a seascape without painting, with the longing motif of looking into a blue distance.
In this book, art historian Franz Müller explores the complexity behind the apparent simplicity of Markus Raetz's Zeemansblik, highlighting what makes the relief a landmark of Swiss art. -
Zurich?s Kronenhalle restaurant is a world-famous icon of gastronomy
The Kronenhalle is distinguished by a fine collection of classical modernist art on permanent display in the brasserie, dining rooms, and the adjacent bar
This is the only book comprehensively featuring the Kronenhalle art collection
Atmospheric photographs are supplemented with literary texts, a complete catalogue of the collection, and the story of its emergence and evolution
A perfect gift for lovers of art and fine dining, and for Zurich enthusiasts
Zurich?s Kronenhalle restaurant is a living legend and 2024 marks the centenary of the likewise legendary Hulda Zumsteg (1890?1984) taking over as its landlady. For decades, the restaurant and adjacent bar have brought together the city?s bohemians and the bourgeoisie. Celebrities from the worlds of art, design, literature, and stage were among the regulars. Works by artists such as Pierre Bonnard, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, and Pablo Picasso are naturally part of its interior.
The revised new edition of this book, first published in 2019, explores the art at the Kronenhalle from various perspectives. Photographs offer atmospheric impressions of the brasserie, dining rooms, and bar, in daylight and at night. Literary texts turn paintings into protagonists. A complete catalogue and the story of its emergence and evolution place the collection in wider context and portray one of Zurich?s most traditional restaurants against the backdrop of an extraordinary family and business history.
The restaurant?s enduring success is founded in the unique way in which Hulda Zumsteg ran the place, and in the friendships that her son Gustav Zumsteg (1915?2005) brought to Zurich. His deep appreciation of art fueled the textile creations of Abraham AG, the silk trading firm he owned, and led to him assembling the fine collection that today turns every lunch, dinner, or drink at the Kronenhalle into an encounter with classical modernism in art. -

Françoise Petrovitch : De l'absence

Studies the evocative work of French artist Françoise Pétrovitch through the lens of absence.
Françoise Pétrovitch, born in 1964, is among the most distinguished contemporary artists in France. Her art reveals ambiguous, often transgressive worlds that play with conventional boundaries and defy interpretation. The intimate, the fragment, the disappearance, as well as themes such as doppelgängers, transition, and cruelty, run through her works, which are populated by animals, flowers, and creatures and whose atmosphere, alternately bright or nocturnal, rarely leaves a viewer untouched.
Framed by the topic of absence, this volume features new and recent drawings, prints, and video art by Françoise Pétrovitch. Absence can be agonizing, a tragedy. As a counterpart to presence, it is characterized by longing and projection; it describes the passing of time, distance, and lack. Richly illustrated and with essays on Pétrovitch's art and the various techniques she uses, the book offers a deep look into the worlds she creates. -

Migration of form : exhibitions for the global present
Roger martin Buergel, Sophia Prinz
- Scheidegger & Spiess
- 15 Avril 2025
- 9783039420032
The term "migration of form" describes a curatorial method that takes aim at the contradictions of the Western museum traditions and the ways exhibitions we have been conceived and designed. The method adresses transcultural entanglements in the past and present from which objects emerge, rather than working with distinctions such as art and non-art or cultural identities and concepts such as "Africa" or "Reneaissance." It proposes a new type of museum for global audiences that serves as a platform for discourses on urgent sociopolitical topics and as a space of experimentation with new ideas and forms of display.
This book explains and applies the "migration of form" by offering insights into the curatorial method Roger M. Buergel has experimented with at Zurich's Johann Jacobs Museum and other venues in Europe and Asia. Descriptions of single exhibitions on global trade, raw materials, or artists such as Maya Deren and Allan Sekula are complemented by concise texts which illuminate the theoretical foundations of the curatorial process. Richly illustrated, the volume invites a timely and broadened view of art and cultural history. Text in English and German.

Surrealismus : Le grand jeu
Juri Steiner, Pierre-Henri Foulon
- Scheidegger & Spiess
- 8 Juillet 2024
- 9783039421916
2024 marks the centenary of the publication of André Breton's Surrealist Manifesto, and thus the birth of the Surrealist movement. This German language book celebrates 100 years of Surrealism, combining historical retrospection, interpretation, and the perspective of contemporary artists who explore Surrealist themes and forms in their work. It is based on the Surrealist literary magazine Le Grand Jeu, which was published between 1928 and 1930.
Games to which the Surrealists referred are a core theme of the volume: chess and the «Jeu de Marseille,» a special set of tarot cards created by the Surrealists in the south of France, where many had to flee from German occupation between 1940 and 1944. Alongside, the essays investigate topics such as identity, metamorphosis, esotericism, kabbalah, and magic, as well as speculation, abstraction, and automatism. Moreover, new light is shed on the female members and affiliates of the Surrealist movement, including Claude Cahun, Leonora Carrington, Suzanne Duchamp, Leonor Fini, Gladys Hynes, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Tanning, and others.
The book is also an homage to the never-published fourth issue of Le Grand Jeu, which has been preserved as a maquette and is reproduced here in facsimile images. -

For thousands of years, people have built so-called calendar buildings: buildings that served as sundials for measuring time or were used for astronomical calculations. The most famous examples include the Pyramids of Giza, the Megalithic Temples of Malta, the Solarium Augusti on Rome's Campus Martius, or the ancient observatories in Korea, Baghdad, Cairo, or Samarkand. The oldest known archaeo-astronomical device dates back to around 6000 BC and was discovered only some 20 years ago at Nabta Playa in Egypt.
The German photographer Hans Pieler (1951-2012) dedicated himself comprehensively to these calendar buildings. In a wide-ranging photographic project spanning 15 years, Pieler travelled the world in the search for such sites, studied them, and recorded many of them in striking photographs. His interest was focused both on the architecture and its particular coding through the respective culture as well as on the theory of photography, the allegorical image of the time.
Due to Pieler's premature death in 2012, the fascinating project remained unfinished and unpublished. This book now for the first time features a selection of some 100 of the best shots from the artist's estate. Complemented by illuminating essays, they form a unique photographic study of these architectures and their meaning and purpose as a reflection of time in stone.
